The single line on your quote that decides how much customs risk you carry is the Incoterm. For China imports, the two that come up constantly are DDP and DDU (officially DAP under Incoterms 2020, but most factories still say “DDU”). Same goods, very different ownership of the border.
What DDP means

Delivered Duty Paid. The seller (or their forwarder) handles everything to your door: export clearance, international freight, import clearance, and all duties and taxes. You receive goods ready to sell.
- You see one all-in price.
- You do almost no customs paperwork.
- Risk transfers to you only after delivery.
What DDU / DAP means

Delivered Duty Unpaid (Incoterms 2020 calls it DAP — Delivered at Place). The seller delivers to your named place, but you are the importer of record: you (or your broker) clear customs and pay duty/VAT on arrival.

- Lower headline freight cost.
- You own clearance, timelines, and any storage if things stall.
- You need a broker or the ability to file yourself.
Side-by-side
| —- | DDP | DDU / DAP |
|---|---|---|
| Customs clearance | Seller / forwarder | You / your broker |
| Duty & VAT | Included | You pay on arrival |
| Paperwork for you | Minimal | Significant |
| Upfront price | Higher, all-in | Lower, plus landing costs |
| Best for | First-time / no broker | Experienced / high volume |
| Risk if clearance stalls | Seller’s problem | Your storage fees |
Who should choose DDP
- First-time importers with no US/EU broker relationship.
- Teams that want a predictable landed cost and no surprises.
- Anyone shipping small / urgent batches where managing clearance isn’t worth the hour.

If customs complexity scares you more than a few points of margin, DDP is the calm option. See the Shipping Method Guide for how it fits the bigger picture.
Who should choose DDU
- Importers with an established broker who can clear efficiently.
- High-volume shippers where duty baked into DDP carries a noticeable margin load.
- Businesses that want direct control of the entry and records.
DDU rewards process maturity. If you already have the machinery, you keep more margin.
The real cost difference
DDP is rarely “more expensive” in a way that shows on a rate sheet — it’s that the forwarder prices in:
- the actual duty (which you’d pay anyway under DDU),
- clearance handling,
- and a risk buffer for delays or inspections.
DDU looks cheaper until you add broker fees, possible storage, and your own time. For many first orders the two land within a few percent — but DDP removes the variance. Always compare all-in delivered vs freight + your landed cost, not headline freight.
Compliance: DDP does not erase your obligations
A common myth: “DDP means customs is the forwarder’s problem, so I don’t need records.” Not true. As the importer, you still bear responsibility for accurate origin, value, and classification — and for frameworks like Section 301 tariffs and UFLPA. A compliant DDP provider clears on your behalf, with your data. It is not a shield for misdeclaration.
Common mistake
Assuming DDP = zero paperwork. You still need a commercial invoice, packing list, and accurate product details so the forwarder classifies correctly. Garbage-in data under DDP just shifts the penalty risk to your provider — who will pass it back to you contractually.
FAQ
Is DDP the same as “door to door”?
Often yes in practice, but “door to door” describes the route; “DDP” specifies who pays duty. Confirm both.
Can I switch from DDU to DDP mid-relationship?
Yes — ask your forwarder to quote DDP. The difference is mostly the duty estimate plus handling.
Does DDP avoid Section 301 duties?
No. DDP includes them (or should). If a DDP quote seems to ignore 301, that’s a red flag — see Section 301 Tariffs.
