A number like “$4.50 per kg all in” only means something once you know which of those layers it covers and how the kilogram was calculated.

Most disagreements about air freight rates from China to the USA are not about price at all. They are about two quotes that were built on different assumptions. This guide takes a quote apart line by line so you can compare two offers on the same terms.

How is chargeable weight calculated for air freight from China to the USA?

Airlines bill the greater of gross weight and volumetric weight. The IATA volumetric standard for general cargo divides centimetres by 6000, which equals 167 kg per cubic metre. Express couriers divide by 5000, or 200 kg per cubic metre, so the identical carton bills heavier with a courier than with an airline.

Chargeable weight rounds up to the next 0.5 kg under IATA rules, and on a consolidated shipment the whole air waybill is charged as one weight rather than carton by carton.

Work an example: ten cartons at 80 × 60 × 50 cm, 200 kg total. Volume is 240,000 cubic centimetres per carton set, so volumetric weight is 400 kg. You bill on 400 kg, not 200. Before you ask for air freight rates from China to the USA, calculate this number yourself, because every later line depends on it.

Why the different divisors? Cargo aircraft sell space and weight capacity together, and the 6000 divisor prices that balance. Integrators fly door to door with premium handling and use 5000. The difference moves the same box 20% in chargeable weight, which is one reason courier and airline quotes should never be compared per kilogram.

What surcharges appear on an air freight invoice?

The base rate is the smallest negotiable part of the bill. Around it sit:

Charge

ما هو؟

Usually billed at

Fuel surcharge (FSC)

Indexed to jet fuel

Per kg, alongside base rate

Security surcharge (SSC)

Screening and security handling

Per kg or flat

War risk surcharge

Insurance risk on certain routings

Per kg, lane specific

AWB fee

Document issuance

Flat per shipment

Pick up and delivery in China

Trucking to the origin warehouse or airport

Flat or per kg

البيان الجمركي للتصدير

China side filing

Flat per shipment

Handling and build up

Warehouse work, ULD loading

Flat or per kg

Quoted all in or quoted per line, these belong to the origin side. They are the lines a cheap quote quietly drops.

What destination fees arrive after the flight?

This is where unplanned cost lives. The airline’s destination terminal charges for recovery of the cargo, and the import side adds its own:

Airlines terminal handling and recovery, often abbreviated as AIRC or D/O related fees.

Free time and storage, commonly 48 to 72 hours before daily charges begin.

Customs entry filing by the broker at destination.

Single entry or continuous bond where required for formal entry.

Duty, MPF, and any Section 301 measure, assessed on the entered value under the HTS classification.

Trucking from the airport to the final address.

Under DDP the forwarder owns every line above. Under DAP they own the clearance work and you pay the money. Under FCA or EXW, all of it lands on whoever receives the cargo, so a low origin quote simply moves the bill across the ocean.

Why is cheap air freight from China usually expensive?

Because the per kilogram headline is the easiest number to strip. A quote that undercuts the market by a third is normally doing one of four things: quoting on gross weight instead of chargeable weight, excluding destination terminal fees, assuming a routing with two transits and long connection risk, or planning to bill fuel and security at invoice stage rather than quote stage.

None of that is fraud. It is an unpriced quote, and the correction arrives as an invoice you did not expect. The cheap quote and the honest quote are often the same money; only one of them tells you in advance.

You can test a quote in ninety seconds. Ask for the all in delivered price per chargeable kilogram, the divisor used, and a list of what is excluded. A forwarder who answers those three in writing can be worked with. The real quote versus hidden fee problem is generic to all modes, and the fix is the same in air: demand the exclusion list.

How do you compare air freight quotes apples to apples?

Convert every quote to delivered cost per chargeable kilogram, including destination fees and estimated duty.

Confirm the same volumetric divisor and the same routing, direct or via a named transit point.

Confirm the product code and whether the shipment can be bumped, since a rolled shipment has a real cost in stockouts.

Confirm who pays at destination, under which Incoterm, and whether a bond is included.

Two quotes that survive those four questions can be compared on price. Two that do not are different products.

When do air freight rates from China to the USA spike?

Capacity, not fuel, moves the market most. Rates climb ahead of Chinese New Year as factories rush pre holiday cargo, stay firm through the spring restock, and peak again from October as retail lands goods for Q4. Outside those windows, soft demand pulls rates down and indirect routings widen the discount against direct services.

The structural view, including why the per kilogram figure behaves the way it does across modes, is in the air versus sea cost per kilogram breakdown. For the courier side of the same lane, DHL pricing from China to the USA shows what integrator rates include.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What is a realistic air freight rate from China to the USA?

Rates move weekly with capacity and routing, so any fixed number ages fast. Plan on a per chargeable kilogram rate plus roughly a third to a half again in surcharges and destination fees, and get a dated, all in quote rather than a market benchmark.

Why is my air freight invoice higher than the quote per kg?

Because quotes are commonly given on the base rate only. Fuel, security, AWB, origin handling, destination terminal, and clearance fees land later. Compare delivered cost per chargeable kilogram instead.

Does the quote include US customs duty?

Usually not unless you asked for delivered duty paid. Duty, the merchandise processing fee, and Section 301 measures are assessed at entry against the HTS classification, and they are separate from freight.

How is chargeable weight different from gross weight?

Gross weight is what the scale says. Chargeable weight is the greater of that and volumetric weight, dimensions divided by 6000 for airline cargo, and it is the number every rate line is applied to.

Can I get a fixed all in price?

Yes. A forwarder quoting DDP gives one fixed figure covering freight, duty, clearance, and delivery, which is the cleanest basis for comparing air freight rates from China to the USA across providers. The booking mechanics behind that quote are in the step by step shipping process.

Is a direct flight worth the premium?

For urgent or high value cargo, usually yes, because fewer transits mean fewer bump and delay risks. For planned restocks, a quality indirect routing can cut meaningful cost at the price of one to three extra days.

What is included in an air freight quote from China to the USA?
